Why Parents Love Our Coffee Shop in Tysons Corner During Youth Teams & Seasonal Camps
Coffee and climbing go together like peas and carrots. It’s true. One of my fondest climbing trip memories was my first time really dirtbagging in Indian Creek outside of Monticello, Utah, and rolling up to the corner of Beef Basin Road to use the restroom. A VW bus was parked up with a cute little logo and the words “Carabiner Coffee” painted across its side. They had their market figured.
Traditional climbers from all over the world flock to the Creek to test their crack climbing skills. It’s a mecca. And this dusty bathroom parking lot pullout was the spot. Climbers with their camp cups lined up for a pour over, congregating and conversing over a freshly made cup in a beautiful landscape, making single-serving friendships and bonding over a love of coffee, and climbing.
Coffee as a Cornerstone of Community
Sharing a cup of coffee. It’s a ritual ingrained in American culture. Our love of caffeine. The first-date coffee date, the catch-up with an old friend, the meet-cute, the gossip spill—coffee goes well with conversation; it is social. It is cultural. New friendships and life-long bonds have been forged over a good cup of coffee, and so have relationships.
It shouldn’t come as a surprise that this magical bean water is considered an integral part of the climbing community. A cup of coffee is a most excellent pre-climbing ritual. Caffeine itself comes with some wild performance benefits, including improved mental focus, reduced perception of fatigue, and even documented power gains, according to Climbing Nutrition. So, there’s a reason you see so many climbers gravitate to cafes and local coffee shops and frequent Access Fund’s Climber’s Coffee when they are at the crag.
Why the Coffee Shop, Tysons Corner at Vertical Rock is a Hit
Here at Vertical Rock Climbing and Fitness in Tysons Corner, we include a coffee shop in our gym because we know how coffee can improve the quality of life for climbers and non-climbers alike. We wanted to give our climbers the option of an added pick-me-up before, during, or after their session. We also wanted to make life a little easier for parents accompanying their kids to the gym or just trying to squeeze in a quick training or project session amid the chaos of their day. That’s how Base Camp Coffee Roasters was born.
Parents especially appreciate our café when our seasonal climbing camps are in session or if their children are part of our youth climbing teams. It’s the perfect spot to decompress while the kids are climbing and you want to take a load off while enjoying a latte. This social scene makes it easier to meet and mingle with climbing gym parents like you! Great coffee and a comfortable place to chat with and make new friends, relax, and unwind, or even get a little work done, whether that’s over a caffeinated or decaf beverage.
