Why Top Rope Climbing is Perfect for Young Climbers

Some climbers consider a loose top rope the purest form of climbing—maybe “some” is a generous word. By some, I mean my long-time climbing partner and good friend, who made this statement half-jokingly while we were top roping hard 5-11 Joshua Tree face climbs that neither of us would be comfortable leading in the park.
With proper anchors, checks, and gear, top roping is a safe and low stakes/stress form of rock climbing. It’s also more accessible in the respect that it requires less gear. Top rope climbers need only: a static or dynamic rope, anchor materials (quickdraws, slings, a quad set up, or a sliding X), and personal gear (a harness, rock climbing shoes, belay device, and chalk bag if you prefer).

Why Top Rope Climbing is Good for Kids and Beginners

When new climbers are learning the ropes, top roping provides the perfect avenue for getting acquainted with the sport without the added stress that comes with lead climbing or being on the sharp end as us more advanced climbers say. It has an advantage over bouldering as climbers can scale taller walls safely (high ball bouldering can be scary and high consequence!).
There are so many benefits! Top rope climbing has minimal risk. This is especially the case in controlled gym environments where rockfall is not a concern. For younger climbers new to this highly individualized sport, this is ideal. Less to worry and think about on the wall allows for a more enjoyable experience. More volume! Anyone can top rope. Not every climber has the mental chops to perform well and have a fun time on the sharp end.

Top Roping Allows Novice Climbers to Focus Solely on the Climb Itself

Top rope climbing is amazing. It allows climbers to completely focus on the act of climbing itself and see exactly what they are capable of on the wall. It also gives climbers the confidence to hop on routes they may never considered leading (things that are graded with an R—run out routes with bad fall potential that come with the possibility of injury or X—relatively unprotected routes that a fall might result in fatality), and, in general, routes that a climber may not feel that they can lead confidently.
Top rope climbers can focus on the movement and technique and lock-in with comfort. It allows for more creativity and problem solving. I’ve been able execute moves on a top route that I never would have dreamed possible while lead climbing. It is something that helps build confidence when it comes to climbing ability—the feeling of wow, “I didn’t think I had that in me.” There’s something to be said about the “tron-site” (onsite on a top rope). For younger and new climbers this can be invaluable in building confidence in the sport.

Top Rope Climbing Helps Younger Climbers Build Confidence in Their Skills

Top rope belaying and climbing is in some ways less nuanced in terms of belaying and top roping can help young climbers establish good practices and refine their rock climbing skills and safety practices with proper instruction. This is an excellent way for kids thirteen and older to learn proper and safe belay practices and become comfortable.
Better yet, top roping is an excellent family activity that parents can participate in with their teens—and it can even be a bonding experience and foster a relationship of trust. One of the best parts about top rope climbing in the climbing gym is that it is an all-season activity. So, regardless of the weather or time of year, gym top roping is accessible. This is great for training in the off-season and a great pivot when your outdoor climbing trip gets skunked by bad weather.
